Welcome to Africa Nature Solutions Trust

About Us

The road ahead in Africa of the climate crisis, biodiversity loss, and associated environmental injustices demand an all hands-on-deck effort. Nature-based solutions are a critical component of this work. There is need for non-profit organizations, researchers, and state actors to identify challenges that keep nature-based solutions from reaching their full potential. The roadmap lies in African countries working together to meet their commitments under the Paris Climate Agreement, the framework emerging through the Convention on Biological Diversity, and other national commitments. This calls for African countries to play a role and create a future where nature-based solutions are a first choice for combating climate change, addressing injustices, creating prosperous communities, and building resilient infrastructure. To champion this continental course, the Africa Nature Solutions Trust has been established to spearhead the adoption of these recommendations as by doing so will advance nature-based solutions as powerful tools that the continent and the world — need now.

Our Vision

The Africa Nature Based Solutions Trust (ANABAST) is established to help communities in Africa to take steps to sustainably manage their natural environment to protect themselves from disaster risks.

Our Mission

To implement NbS actions in Africa on land-based and marine ecosystems to protect, sustainably manage and restore natural or modified ecosystems that address societal challenges effectively and adaptively, simultaneously providing human well-being and biodiversity benefits.

Overall Goal

To support nature-based initiatives in Africa and sensitize the wider group of stakeholders through collating scientific evidence and evidence from practice, generating knowledge, capacity building and policy advocacy.

Overall Objectives

  1. To work with communities in Africa to design and deliver disaster risk reduction projects involving nature-based solutions
  2. To enhance understanding of the importance of nature-based solutions (NbS)
  3. To generate scientific knowledge on NbS
  4. Disseminate findings, insights and experiences on NbS to influence national policy and facilitate wider use
  5. To scale-up the implementation of NbS in Africa
  6. To develop new tools and guidelines on nature-based solutions for disaster risk reduction
  7. To promote nature-based solutions and sharing lessons learned within and beyond our global network to improve the knowledge and capacity of state and non state actors around Africa

Our Work

We champion the implementation of nature-based solutions in Africa to offset carbon emissions with the aim to mitigate the adverse climate change through the protection, restoration and management of natural and semi-natural ecosystems. Our NBS offerings include climate change mitigation & resilience, improved agriculture and land management, reduced emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD/REDD+), afforestation/reforestation/forest conservation, Blue Carbon and ecosystem conservation.

  • Afforestation & Reforestation projects (A/R)
  • Improved forest management projects (IFM, REDD)
  • Sustainable agriculture & land management Projects
  • Methane reduction in Rice farming
  • Restoration & Plantation of Mangroves
  • Grassland or Wetland management

We partner, we collaborate

We build long-term relationships with like-minded partners who are already working closely with local communities. Together we design, scale, strengthen and sustain NbS management and governance at landscape levels. We also bring partners together in networks to advocate for reform, and share tools and best practices to support NbS communities across the Africa.

Most affected communities

The smallholder farmer we work with put their trust in us. They know the resolutions we recommend are based in on solid science, eons of real life practice and deliver sustainable outcomes.

Impact at scale

We’re supporting communities to establish, steward and protect vast swathes of terrestrial landscapes in Africa. Farmland, rangelands, wildlife areas and water territories.

We’re pioneering effective and scalable solutions NbS management and conservation. We’re strengthening local leadership and building civil society networks, helping to create inclusive organisations that will long outlive our support.
